Background

If you’re reading this, you should already know me. You probably also know that I am entering Teach for America to spend the next two years fighting education inequality by teaching math to middle or high school students in the Phoenix area. This blog will be about my personal journey and experiences over the course of the next two years. In the true spirit of TFA, I have set a quantifiable goal of writing at least one post per week. I hope I can reach it! Now here’s some more background!

Me
I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and attended Dimond High School before leaving the state to go to Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. While at Gustavus I majored in political science and minored in management. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in India, Thailand (blog), and China (blog). More recently, I went on a two week Princess Cruise up the Amazon River during which I proposed to my wonderful fiancĂ©, Ashley Ohlson. There’s a website for our December 29, 2009 wedding too!

Teach for America
This is a national non-profit dedicated to fighting education inequality in low income areas across the country. It places high-achieving, recent college graduates in classrooms after an intense summer training program. This year (2009) there were over 35,000 applicants for 4,000 spots. If you want to learn more, check out their website, or track down a copy of Relentless Pursuit by Donna Foote.
